Set up Anki with AnkiConnect

Anki is a free flashcard app that has run on spaced repetition for two decades. Download the desktop version, the AnkiConnect add-on only runs there. AnkiMobile (iOS, paid) and AnkiDroid (Android, free) sync your reviews so you can study on your phone once the desktop is set up.

In Anki, open Tools, then Add-ons, then Get Add-ons, and paste the code 2055492159. Restart Anki. This add-on lets Michi talk to Anki on your machine, which is how the vocabulary checkpoint can confirm a deck for you.

Open Tools, Add-ons, select AnkiConnect, then Config. Add your Michi address to webCorsOriginList, then restart Anki. Use "http://localhost:4321" while running Michi locally, and "https://learnmichi.com" for the live site.

From the Michi project folder, run the deck builder. It writes one .apkg file per unit into pipeline/output. In Anki, use File, then Import, and pick the .apkg for the unit you are studying. Re-importing an updated deck upgrades the cards instead of duplicating them.

Open your Michi dashboard. The Anki dot under SRS connections turns green when the link works. On any unit's vocabulary step, the "Check my Anki deck" button reports how many cards have matured, and opens the grammar for you once the deck is settling in.
The study method that makes small units soak in
- Learn the whole deck as new cards before you start the grammar. Aim for recognition, not mastery.
- Review every day. Anki shows you each card right before you would forget it. Ten minutes clears a day.
- Let each card reach a 3 to 5 day interval. When the deck has settled there, the words hold on their own, and the grammar stops fighting you.
- Keep old decks in rotation. You never truly finish a deck, you just see its cards less often. That is what long-term memory looks like.
